Dragonfruit Smoothie Recipe: Easy, Tropical and Healthy

OK so I’m literally obsessed with this dragonfruit smoothie recipe right now and you need it in your life!! I’ve been blending EVERYTHING lately (my poor blender is begging for a vacation lol) from those green smoothies with spinach I chug after Monday yoga to my breakfast smoothie bowls that save me on hectic mornings.

So last weekend I was at the farmers market (the one on 3rd street with the guy who always wears the funny hats?) and spotted these GORGEOUS dragonfruits. I grabbed them so fast I nearly knocked over a display of honey jars! 🙈

Dragonfruit takes me right back to Thailand where I ate it every single morning on the beach. That color just speaks to my Libra soul – I mean, that vibrant pink is basically self-care in fruit form!

This fruit smoothie is my current lifesaver on those chaotic Wednesday mornings when I’m rushing my daughter to ballet and trying not to look like I just rolled out of bed at school drop-off. One hand on the steering wheel, one hand on my smoothie, pretending I have my life together!

ingredients for an easy fruit smoothie recipe, includinng dragonfruits, banana, greek yogurt, almond milk, honey.

Ingredients for this Easy Dragonfruit Smoothie

These are the ingredients you need for 2 big glasses:

  • 2 small ripe dragonfruits (pitaya), peeled and cubed
  • 2 medium ripe bananas
  • 3/4 cup almond milk
  • 2-3 big spoonfuls of Greek yogurt
  • 1-2 tablespoons honey (optional if your fruits aren’t super sweet or ripe)
  • Ice cubes (handful if your morning is as hot as my kitchen with no AC)
Two glasses with a delicious purple-pink smoothie.

How to Make the Perfect Dragonfruit Smoothie

  1. Cut the dragonfruit in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Not gonna lie, I find this weirdly satisfying – kinda like peeling off a face mask? Just me?
  2. Toss the dragonfruit flesh, banana, almond milk, and Greek yogurt into your blender. My ancient blender has exactly two settings: off and WAKE THE NEIGHBORS.
  3. Blend until smooth and creamy. This takes like 30 seconds unless you’re using my blender, then it’s more like “blend until your cat Milo runs from the room in terror.”
  4. Give it a quick taste test! I usually skip the honey but my 8-year-old insists it’s “not sweet enough, mom!” every single time. Kid has a serious sweet tooth (not from my side of the family, looking at you, Mark).
  5. Pour into your favorite glass and drink immediately! Or if you’re me, pour it into a travel mug and drink it at stoplights while mentally rehearsing excuses for being late again.

Storage Tips for Your Tropical Smoothie

This purple dream tastes best fresh, when the color is giving main character energy in your Instagram story.

You can totally store leftovers in the fridge for a day, just expect some separation (like my feelings about doing laundry – completely separated from joy).

Pro tip from a mom who hates waste: freeze leftover fruit smoothie in popsicle molds! My son thinks they’re “dragon popsicles” which sounds way cooler than “mommy doesn’t throw out smoothie” popsicles.

The Amazing Health Benefits of Dragonfruit (That’ll Make You Feel Less Guilty About That Second Margarita Last Night)

So I’ve been reading about dragonfruit benefits while doom-scrolling at 11pm (as one does) and honestly? This fruit is basically a multivitamin disguised as tropical eye candy!

Dragonfruit is loaded with fiber that keeps things ahem moving smoothly (TMI but we’re all friends here).

It’s also packed with antioxidants that fight those nasty free radicals that cause aging – which I’m particularly interested in since I found my first gray hair last week and had a minor meltdown in the bathroom while Mark pretended not to notice!

The vitamin C content is off the charts, which explains why my skin always looks better during my smoothie phases. My friend Anna swears dragonfruit helped her immune system during flu season last year when everyone at her office was dropping like flies.

It’s also surprisingly low in calories and sugar compared to other tropical fruits, which makes me feel slightly better about the entire pan of brownies that mysteriously disappeared while I was binge-watching that new K-drama last weekend. Balance, right? ✨

Frequently Asked Questions About This Fruit Smoothie

Is dragonfruit good for you?

Yes!! It’s packed with fiber and antioxidants that my skin desperately needs after binging another K-drama until 2am last night. This smoothie basically counts as self-care, and I’m sticking to that story.

The Greek yogurt adds protein which is clutch for those mornings when I know lunch will be “whatever I can find in the fridge between Zoom calls.”

Can I use frozen dragonfruit?

GIRL YES! Frozen dragonfruit is my secret weapon when fresh isn’t available. I found bags of it at Trader Joe’s (right next to the chocolate-covered everything that somehow keeps falling into my cart).

Using frozen fruit makes the smoothie extra thicc without having to water it down with ice. Anna from book club swears this is the only way she makes smoothies now.

What can I substitute for Greek yogurt?

If dairy isn’t your jam, coconut yogurt makes this taste like a literal tropical vacation. It’s what I use when Lisa (my baking genius friend) comes over since she’s avoiding dairy.

I’ve also used silken tofu which sounds weird but works surprisingly well! Just don’t tell my family because they’ll suddenly “remember” they have other breakfast plans.

Why This Purple Smoothie Will Become Your New Obsession

There’s something about drinking something THIS purple that makes me feel like I’m living my best life. I brought these to book club last month and literally had to send the recipe to everyone before we even discussed the book!

It’s like a mood boost in a glass. When I’m sipping this, I’m not thinking about the mountain of laundry or my son’s science project that’s due tomorrow (that he just remembered about).

Blend Your Way to Happiness With This Healthy Smoothie

Not to be dramatic, but this delicious and healthy dragonfruit smoothie might actually change your morning routine forever! It’s basically sunshine in a glass, even on those mornings when you can’t remember if you brushed your teeth (been there).

Drop me a comment if you try it! Did you add any weird mix-ins? My friend Jim adds chia seeds to literally everything and swears it’s life-changing. I’m not convinced but I’m open to your smoothie hacks!
